HEALTHIER CANDLES

May 18, 2008

DO YOU LOVE CANDLES BUT WONDER HOW THEY MAY BE AFFECTING YOUR HEALTH?  Read More Here…

Surprisingly, one of the largest contributors to indoor air pollution are scented candles, another source of “fragrance”.

There are a few issues here. One, a lot of candles are made with a lead wick core. So when you burn them you are putting that lead directly into the air in the form of smoke and carbon…yikes!
Also, most candles are made with Paraffin, which is Petroleum based and a byproduct of gasoline, so when they are burned they release carcinogenic toxins into the air.
Two of these carcinogens of concern are Toluene and Benzene.  In fact, the EPA states that indoor air pollution is up to 3 times
higher than outdoor air pollution from household items such as petroleum based candles.

Not to worry, in today’s eco-friendly environment there are other options out there that are not only non-toxic, and non-hazardous to your health, but they are earth friendly as well.  Both Soy and Beeswax candles are made from renewable resources.  They are long burning, and easier to clean than traditional candles.  So, you can still create that vibe that only the light of a candle can, and you can feel good about it at the same time.
When choosing your candle, here are a few key points:

* Opt for Beeswax or Soy candles, but make sure that it is 100% beeswax (soy) and no parts paraffin.
*  Make sure that the candle contains a “Natural Wick”
Some of the non-toxic candles we recommend are:

-  Bluecorn Naturals
-

Beeluxe Bluewick
-
  Dirt
-
  Mrs. Meyers

If all of this talk of indoor air pollution is making you wonder how to better your air quality, you can also invest in air purification systems. These days there are some wonderful options, however the best air purifier out there is probably Advanced Pure Air, which touts efficacy in removing indoor air pollutants such as:

*  Mold, Bacteria, Viruses and other airborne germs.
*  Traps tobacco smoke, pollen, dust, pet dander and other harmful airborne particles.
*  Effective up to 800 sq. ft.

As you can see, although scented candles have always represented a romantic aspect of our lives, there are some potentially harmful repercussions associated with most traditional candles.
Luckily candles do not have to be a thing of the past, we just have to be a bit more of a conscious consumer.
