LOOKING FOR GREEN HOME CLEANERS THAT ARE SAFE AND HEALTHY FOR YOUR FAMILY?  Read more here…

As we discussed in our article “ Chemicals in the Home”, there are potentially harmful chemicals in conventional cleaning products.

If you are looking for cleaning products that are made with more natural ingredients, here are some products that I like that are “fragrance”, V.O.C and Phthalate Free.

You can also click HERE to visit our online store, or on any of the links below for more in depth information.

* BabyGanics: BabyGanics “Healthy Home’s” mission is to make your home a safe and clean environment, free of harmful chemicals and toxins found in many common household cleaning products. Their products are specifically formulated to be more effective than conventional cleaners, while ensuring the safety of children, pets and growing families.
All BabyGanics Healthy Home Products are:
* Plant Based

* Begley’s Best: Created by actor, environmentalist Ed Begley Jr to get your home squeaky clean without the worry of exposing your family to the dangers of toxic chemicals. Begley’s Best products are an effective, natural alternative to chemical ridden household cleaners that leave a chemical residue.
Another reason we love Begley’s Best? The company donates all profits to charities benefiting the environment. How cool is that? Begley’s Best Contains water, coconut and alcohol. Simple and effective

* Biokleen: Biokleen manufactures and distribute a perfect blend of earth-friendly, safe, non-toxic and biodegradable cleaners that work fast and easy. All of their products are non-aerosol and ozone safe and are not tested on animals; containing no V.O.C.’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) that cause the photochemical reaction of atmospheric oxygen to smog. All Biokleen products conform to all USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) guidelines in respect to use in federally inspected meat and poultry facilities. NOTE: Biokleen products extend out far beyond household cleaners, they have a diverse product portfolio of environmentally friendly products that include: Industrial, Marine & RV, Automotive, Motorcycle, Automotive, Motorcycle, Snowmobile, Janitorial as well as Household cleaners.

* Dr. Bronners: Renowned for their quality, versatility and eco-friendliness, Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps enjoyed a small but loyal following in the early years. In the late 1960s, however, soap sales started to explode, due to the unsurpassed ecological quality. Word-of-mouth soon made Dr. Bronner’s the iconic soap of that era, and in the decades that followed the soaps spread into every health food store in the U.S. and then into the mainstream as well — winning over fans from all walks of life on the way to becoming the number-one-selling natural brand of soap in North America.

* Method: Method products are non-toxic and made with naturally derived biodegradable surfactants. They are not tested on animals, are cruelty free and use recyclable materials in their packaging.

* Mrs. Meyers: Mrs. Meyers products are made of only naturally derived ingredients such as plan resources, or “safe synthetics” which they define as synthetics with a long history of safety and efficacy. All of their liquid cleaners are biodegradable and while their powdered formulas do contain minerals that do not biodegrade, they do break down into non-harmful decomposition products. These products are free of synthetic chemicals and aim to use renewable ingredients such as plant-based resources (i.e olive, coconut, corn, soy etc.). They do not test on animals and are cruelty free. Mrs. Meyer’s products contain no solvents, petroleum, distillates, bleach, or phosphates and have a neutral pH, so they can safely come in contact with the skin.

* Seventh Generation: Seventh Generation offers a complete line of natural household products designed to work as well as their traditional counterparts, but use renewable, non-toxic, phosphate-free, and biodegradable ingredients as often as possible, and are never tested on animals. Seventh Generation products are healthy and safe for the air, the surfaces, the pets, and the people in your home–and for the environment outside of it. Every time you use Seventh Generation products you make a difference by saving natural resources, keeping toxic chemicals out of the environment, and making the world a safer place for this and the next seven generations.

While all of these brands are fantastic, and I use them where appropriate, what I’ve found to be the best cleaning alternative are three things you probably have in your home right now. Baking soda, white vinegar, and lemon to name a few. Here is a great site with all natural recipes for making your own
household cleaners, here is another site I like, but please note MOST of the cleaners listed are safe and non-toxic, but she does have a note at the bottom that boric acid, borax and ammonia should be used with caution. Personally I just avoid these, but it’s a far better alternative. Check out clean and green.

I hope that this article clarifies for you some of the difference between some of the cleaning products out there on the market. The bottom line is that eco-friendly household cleaners are the wave of the future and work as good or better than conventional brands. I would encourage you to give them a try, I think you will be very impressed with the results!
In the meantime, if you would like some helpful hints of what are the most dangerous chemicals that may be lurking in your home, check out the following link from “Poison Control Centers” to view a map and give you a better idea of what to carefully store or dispose of (through waste management of course ;-)) altogether.
