CHEMICALS FOUNDS IN DIAPERS AND WIPES
May 18, 2008
ARE YOU WONDERING WHAT CHEMICALS MAY BE LURKING IN YOUR CHILDS DIAPER AND WHICH ONES ARE SAFER FOR BABY? Read More Here…
Conventional Baby Diapers contain 2 chemicals of concern.
The first is Dioxin. When manufacturing the diaper one of the ingredients they use is bleach, and bleach creates Dioxin, which can be found in trace amounts in conventional diapers.
The EPA considers Dioxin to be amongst the most toxic carcinogen. Obviously not the most ideal ingredient to be added into a baby product.
On that note, Dioxin is banned in most countries except the United States. Note, this is the case with MANY products in the U.S. they are safe until proven otherwise. In most other countries (European countries for example) it is the other way around. A product is considered unsafe until proven otherwise.
Finally, once again because babies (especially newborns) systems are so small and developing so rapidly they are most susceptible to the effects of these chemicals.
The second ingredient to be aware of is TBT (tributyltin). Tributyltin is another toxic chemical that has been linked to hormonal disturbances, and harm to the immune system.
Finally there is another controversial product called SAP (sodium polyacrylate). This is the super absorbent
gel that’s used in both conventional and even more natural diapers (such as 7th generation, 365 brand, Nature Babycare, gDiapers etc.). In the past people associated SAP with TSS (toxic shock syndrome), however even after taking the SAP out of feminine products, TSS rates continued to rise. gDiapers has great link to SAP Safety, and considering that gDiapers are cradle to cradle certified that has given me the confidence to use diapers containing SAP on my child.
On that note let’s not forget the wipes!
Ideally, you want a brand that does not contain alcohol, or synthetic ingredients. Take it from me, if you have a child with sensitive skin the wipes can actually cause Diaper Rash. Also, look for wipes that are free of artificial scents (i.e. “fragrance” or “perfume”) and Alkyl Polyglycoside, which acts as a antimicrobial agent. However, the “cide” indicates that there are some less than desired (and unnecessary) chemical side effects from these products.
A little overwhelming right?
