Safe Baby Skin Care: Products Free of Parabens, Phthalates and Fragrances

Like the majority of all skincare products on the market, baby (and children’s) products are not exempt from the presence of Phthalates, Parabens, and “Fragrance”. In fact, some of those very expensive brands that we “pamper” our babies with have some of the highest levels of potentially dangerous chemicals.
Just a re-cap:
Parabens: Parabens are used in products as preserving chemicals. Parabens are xenoestrogens, or chemicals that mimic the action of estrogen in the body and can be potentially harmful, especially to children. Parabens have been linked to cancer, reproductive harm and as hormonal disturbances .
Phthalates: Phthalates are another hormone disrupter which are found en-mass in everything from nail polish to body lotions, i-pods to soft plastic toys so it is more of a challenge to avoid them. They have been identified by the CDC as a cause of concern for links to damage of the liver and the testes, birth defects, cancer, and allergies in children.
“Fragrance”: “Fragrance” is essentially a loophole for manufacturers to put any ingredient into their product. By law companies are supposed to list all ingredients on their product, but because that would be disclosing trade secrets “fragrance”, “perfume”, or “parfum” is a loophole that allows manufacturers to put almost any ingredient in their formula without disclosing it. Don’t be fooled by false advertising, “unscented” does not mean “fragrance free” this may be just another making additive.
So…
Look for products that are free of Parabens, Phthalates and “Fragrance”. It is usually listed right on the packaging. In the meantime some tried, true and safe children’s brands include:
