There has been a lot of talk these days about which bottles are best for baby. It used to be that parents coveted a bottle that would reduce gas and reflux, now it is a bottle that is “safe” and free of BPA, Phthalates, PVC and in some cases other ingredients such as lead. Wouldn’t it be great if a bottle met both needs? Luckily these days we have choices. But first, let’s review what these chemicals are and why we do not want them in our baby bottles.
BPA: Otherwise known as Bisphenol-A is a common plasticizer, which is found in PVC (the soft plastic, or #3 plastic), and polycarbonate plastic, the clear shatterproof plastic, which is often used in water bottles, and baby bottles. BPA has been linked to:
* Reproductive Harm
* Obesity
* Cancer (breast and prostate)
* Hormonal disruptions
* Possible neurotoxicity
Phthalates: Phthalates are another common plasticizer, which are found en-mass in everything from nail polish to body lotions, ipods, to soft plastic toys so it is more of a challenge to avoid them. Phthalates are used to make plastics (such as PVC toys…i.e. “rubber duckie”) soft and flexible. They are also used in Synthetic “Fragrance” under the name Diethyl Phthalate and are found in air fresheners, scented candles, etc. Phthalates have been identified by the CDC as a cause of concern for links to:
* Birth defects
* Allergies
* Damage to the liver and testes
PVC: Otherwise known as Polyvinyl Chloride, often contains Phthalates to make the material more flexible. PVC is found in a variety of everyday items (i.e. shower curtains, the garden hose, etc.). When you smell that “gas” like smell come out of the plastic, it’s most likely PVC. The concern here is that PVC contains additional chemicals, which can leach out of the toys, bottles, etc. Vinyl, traditional soft gel teethers, or bath toys such as rubber duckies, waterproof books, bathing dolls etc. are all prime examples of PVC toys and should be avoided.
What about for Mom? Dump that plastic bottle and recycle an empty GLASS JUICE BOTTLE, it is less expensive and you know it is naturally safe and free of BPA, Phthalates and PVC.
Or, invest in a SIGG water bottle. They are a perfect fit for you stroller cup holder, they are safe, help reduce environmental waste (don’t forget that that water bottle takes about 250 years to break down) save you money and have some very cool designs!
As you can see there are a lot of other parents out there as concerned as you are about using healthy tools to feed baby. So you have choices!
